The Esports teams at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center (GACTC) enjoyed remarkable success in their inaugural season, with two of its four divisions winning the area championships that were played at St. Francis University on Dec. 3.

The Esports teams at the GACTC compete against area high schools in two games: Rocket League, which is a vehicular soccer video game, and Valorant, which is a 5v5 character-based tactical game. Two divisions based on skill are available for each game.

The winning teams and their members are:

Rocket League, Division 2: champions

  • Camden Lafferty
  • Ian Frantz
  • Daniel Kelley

Valorant, Division 1: champions (pictured, with advisor Tim Keener)

  • Marcus Amerine
  • Isaac Rossman
  • Jackson Whitaker
  • Aiden Quirin
  • Aaron Smith

Each of the teams received a plaque and a $500 annual scholarship from St. Francis University.

“Esports programs for the high school level are similar to any sports program except it is played in a digital format,” explained Tim Keener of the GACTC. “Teams are formed and captains are selected and they practice to ready themselves for competition. This competition includes teamwork, communication, and respect for each other.”
