The focus of the Nurse Aide program is to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to perform basic resident care in a Long Term Care (nursing) facility. With the knowledge and skills gained through the Nurse Aide training program, one will also have the ability to work in a hospital, home care, or other medical facilities. Students learn to feed, bathe, and dress patients, make beds, take vital signs, observe and report any changes and/or concerns of the residents, provide comfort, and communicate effectively with the residents and other medical providers.

Healthcare facilities expect employees to be aware of the professional atmosphere of their business. A mature, professional attitude is required for a successful Nurse Aide trainee. Confidentiality, medical ethics, empathy, and a caring attitude are important qualities of each employee.
The Nurse Aide program is approved through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Graduates of the Nurse Aide program are prepared to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam. Successfully passing this exam places the individual on the PA Nurse Aide Registry, allowing the individual to work in any Long Term Care facility in Pennsylvania.
Nurse Aide schedule
The Nurse Aide program is a total of 27 days: 15 days, consisting of 61 hours of theory and 34 hours of skills lab instruction, conducted in a classroom setting at the GACTC, and 12 days, consisting of 72 hours of clinical instruction in a Long Term Care facility. The daily class schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the clinical schedule is 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., which includes two 15-minute breaks and a half hour lunch.

Acceptance to the Nurse Aide program is based upon the applicant meeting the admission requirements, including necessary academic skills and prerequisites.
To be considered for admission to the Nurse Aide program, applicants must be 18 years of age or older. The following items are required to complete an application to the Nurse Aide program to be considered for admission. All documents must be submitted to the Continuing Education office at GACTC.

Copy of the applicant’s final high school transcript or diploma, documentation of completion of a high school equivalency (i.e. GED), or equivalent foreign education as verified by a GACTC-approved credential evaluation service.
Health Examination Form, completed by medical professional. Students are required, upon acceptance and prior to beginning the training, to be screened for Tuberculosis by having a mantoux (2 Step PPD) test, IGRA blood test, or, if deemed necessary, a chest X-ray. Negative results must be submitted to the Continuing Education Office before the first day of class.
Documentation of flu shot during flu season (fall and winter) is required.
Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance that is within 1 year of the date of application to GACTC. To request this clearance, please visit https://www.compass.state.pa.us/cwis/public/home and create an individual account. Please follow the instructions to apply for the PA Child Abuse History Clearance. The purpose of the clearance is School Employee. When your report is ready (you will receive an email when it is ready), please provide to the Continuing Education office. There is a $13 fee for the Child Abuse History Clearance. The GACTC reserves the right to deny applicants entrance to post-secondary educational programs based on the results of the PA Child Abuse Clearance.
Report of criminal history record information from the PA State Police which is within one year of the date of application to the Nurse Aide program at GACTC. There is a $22 fee for this report. Applicants may submit the Criminal Background Clearance form with the required fee to the Continuing Education Office for processing. GACTC reserves the right to deny applicants admission to post-secondary educational programs based on the results of the criminal background check. GACTC reserves the right to accept an applicant with a criminal background based on the severity, date(s), and frequency of the conviction(s).
Verification of PA Residency Form and the Attestation of Compliance with Act 14 Form must be completed in the Continuing Education Office. A copy of PA photo identification must be made by Continuing Education staff at GACTC.
FBI Criminal History Record if applicant has resided in Pennsylvania for less than two full years prior to the date of application to the GACTC Nurse Aide program.
Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. The GACTC reserves the right to deny admission or readmission to any student, if in the opinion of school authorities, his/her admission is not in the best interest of the student or the school.
